Dungeon23: Greystone - Week 1 Review
Week 1 went great! I wrote and posted every day (already not true for Week 2!). I love the idea that (currently) the only way into the city from the wilderness is through a window into a bedroom. This leads into a house that's been taken over by refugee goblins.
I'm particularly pleased with the with the privy, if I'm honest. LOL. I knew there would be a privy, but had no idea what (if anything) else to put there. So I turned to the random room stocking table in Old School Essentials. It came up as "Trap". So now I had to figure out why the heck there would be a trap in the john. Why would anyone want to prevent someone from going into the privy? Oh wait, what if the trap is to stop something coming out of the privy! That's how I found out that these goblins are recent immigrants to this level of the dungeon. And whatever chased them up the privy chute must be bad enough that they want to trap the entrance. Super cool!
I also like the idea of a servant's quarter that's still haunted by the skeletons of the servants themselves. It's a bit of a spoiler, but there are going to be a lot of undead in week 2. I mention that because I'm not usually a huge fan of a lot of undead just being there without a good reason. Like, I don't see my world as the kind of place that undead just spontaneously arise. Something must have happened, or is still happening, to cause this. I guess we'll find out together!
I named the goblin boss as well. This project is so large in scope and has a daily production schedule. That means that I probably won't be able to generate full details for everything that I might for a smaller or less time-sensitive project. But giving the boss a little character (he prefers to wear as much of his treasure as possible) makes me feel good. I also asked early on, "why do these goblins have coins? They're not minting money, right?" My thinking is no, they're not making money or even using money. The coins are just lovely shiny things to them. They think of them as just more jewelry or decoration. So they drive holes through them and wear them as necklace beads, or sew them onto their clothing. Cool!
I'm also trying to Jacquay the dungeon as I go. I don't have a particular technique for this, just trying to think of multiple paths getting around. So for week one, there are several ways through and out of the house. There are exits in the Master Bedroom, the Great Hall and the Servant's quarters. And there are multiple ways to get to each of those areas as well. I've also already got two paths to other levels. The privy connects to Level 3 and the servant's quarters connect to level 2. I have no idea what else is in those areas, but I don't have to yet!
OK, that's enough review. Now it's time for me to move on to Week 2!
