New Year New Blog...You Get It

In 2020, I got cancer. Lymphoma. I told myself, if I got past that, I'd do something different with my life. Just over 2 years ago, I finished chemo. I've had no return of the cancer in the ensuing two years and so it looks like I'm officially in the clear.

Time to get on with "something different".

I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember.  I play video games, board games, miniatures games and most of all roleplaying games.  I've been into D&D since I was 11 years old.  And I've been a DM for most of that time.

Two years ago, I started an online, open-table-style 5E game with my buddy. We play two or three sessions a month and it's going great. But I want more. 

So, I backed the big Old School Essentials Kickstarter earlier this year and my stuff arrived shortly before Christmas.  With all the holiday work, I haven't had a lot of time to look it over, but I played B/X back in the day, so I'm very excited. I'm not sure yet what all I'm going to do with it.  I've thought about doing a solo-play podcast like Tale of the Manticore. I've thought about pulling a randomly generated hexcrawl from Hexroll. I've thought about dusting off my dad's old print copy of Keep on the Borderlands.

I may do some of those, eventually. Or none of them.

But I've settled on my first actual project. Last week, or so, Sean McCoy tweeted that he's going to do a room-a-day mega-dungeon, calling it Dungeon23. I remember Sean mentioning doing this last year. I tried it and gave up early.

I'm going to try again.

So, I don't know what all will happen with this blog.  But I'm expecting it to be the place where I post about my Dungeon23 project.

Dungeon23: Greystone - Day 4

Today, I learned more about the goblins inhabiting this section of the dungeon. I roughed them out as a faction using the Four Blanks Method from GFC's DND YouTube Channel. You should definitely check out that channel. It is small, but mighty. So, here's what we know about these goblins- Faction: Bloodfeather Goblins Objective: Increased territory Obstacle: Kobolds (TBD) Method: Raids/Warfare This is a discrete band of goblins, who hold some territory here in the dungeon, but would like more. We already know from a previous day that they actually moved here from further down in the dungeon. If they're relatively recent arrivals here, perhaps there are more of them somewhere, thus the need for more space. The chief obstacle to their expansion is kobolds. I'd already had it in the back of my mind that there would be kobolds in the dungeon, but know I know for sure. There must be a population of them somewhere and I assume that the two territories abut one another. The go...

Dungeon23: Greystone - Day 10

SANCTUARY!! Sorry, just channeling my inner Quasimodo there. Anyway, names for different parts of churches vary a lot, but one of the names for the large gathering area which includes the altar is the sanctuary . I think it's a wonderful word, so for this temple, that's definitely what it's called! Yesterday, I mentioned a tiny ritual which needs to be done before entering the sanctuary. Any person entering the sanctuary must pour a dipper of water from the font in 1-8 over their head first. If they do this, that person is "anointed" for one day. Anyone entering the sanctuary who is not anointed is, instead, "reproached". They have the disfavor of the ancient deity upon them. The mechanical effect of being "reproached" is that they have disadvantage on all attack rolls. Disadvantage, of course, is a rule from 5th edition D&D.
